summer mixes

All summer, I’ve had a constantly evolving playlist on my iPod that I listen to almost exclusively. I find some new song I like from eMusic, a blog or a friend, and it gets incorporated into the mix, along with some old favorites and a few oddities. I thought I’d share mine if you are willing to share yours. Deal?

01 Dirty Three, “1000 Miles”
02 Department of Eagles, “Sailing By Night”
03 Nina Nastasia & Jim White, “The Day I Would Bury You”
04 Animal Collective, “Fireworks”
05 Bappi Lahiri, “Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja”
06 Prinzhorn Dance School, “Eat, Sleep”
07 The Answering Machine, “Silent Hotels”
08 Sham the Guard, “Track 10″
09 A Tribe Called Quest, “Award Tour”
10 No Age, “Everybody’s Down”
11 Pussy Galore, “Rocks Off”
12 Verbena, “The Song That Ended Your Career”
13 M.I.A., “Paper Planes”
14 Battles, “Leyendecker”
15 Tokyo Police Club, “Your English Is Good”
16 Unwound, “Envelope”
17 Shellac, “Disgrace”
18 Darondo, “Didn’t I”
19 Clipse, “Ain’t Cha”
20 Method Man, “Bring the Pain”

Some notes:

Favorite song on the mix: “Fireworks” by Animal Collective. That new album — which will not be on eMusic — is sick.

Sham the Guard is a rapper from the Lower East Side. I play ping-pong with his manager/promoter. Really good stuff in the Dipset vein. (PS: I love ping-pong more than almost anything.)

Upcoming Nina Nastasia/Jim White album (which the song above is from) is very, very good.

That Dirty Three track is classic.

Unwound is a reason to exist.

Anyone who likes Southern rock absolutely must grab that Verbena record. It’s a standby of mine.

Anyway, enough of me. What are you listening to?

I am seriously in need of an editor on this list. But (a) I love this question, (b) I am in a particularly relaxed mood (being on a two-week vacation for the first time in years), (c) my wife and I just have very, very strong Pina Coladas. With that in mind:

    1. Fleetwood Mac – Tusk
    2. XTC — Summer’s Cauldron/Grass
    3. Kathy Diamond – All Woman
    4. Beck – Strange Apparition
    5. Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers – Caravan
    6. Annie – My Heartbeat
    7. Augustus Pablo – Frozen Dub
    8. Beach House – Master of None
    9. Ken Boothe – Ain’t No Sunshine
    10. Calexico – Not Even Stevie Nicks
    11. Raul Seixas – Metamorfase Ambulante (City of God soundtrack)
    12. Cobblestone Jazz – Dump Truck
    13. Cocteau Twins – Bluebeard
    14. Cut/Copy – Future
    15. Deerhunter – Fluorescent Grey
    16. Desert Sessions — Subcutaneous Phat
    17. Destroyer – Watercolors Into The Ocean
    18. The Congos – Solid Foundation
    19. Herman Baumann – Concerto for Horn in E-Flat Major (Mozart)
    20. M.I.A. – Amazon
    21. Espers – Tomorrow
    22. Flying Colors – Crossing By Your Star
    23. Fleetwood Mac – Dreams
    24. The New Pornographers – Failsafe
    25. The New Pornographers – Loose Translation
    26. Charles Mingus – Haitian Fight Song
    27. Gui Boratto – It’s Majik
    28. Meshell Ndegeocello – Fantasy (Earth, Wind & Fire Cover)
    29. Lindstrom – I Feel Space
    30. Louis Philippe – Born Beautiful
    31. Pernice Bros. – No. 2
    32. Spoon – Lines In The Suit
    33. Spoon – You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb
    34. Studio – West Side
    35. Sonny Rollins – Kiss and Run
    36. The Sadies – Why Would Anybody Live Here? (Feat. Robyn Hitchcock)
    37. Horace Andy – Spying Glass
    38. Wilco – Handshake Drugs
    39. Wilco – Impossible Germany
    40. Beach Boys – Caroline No
    41. Depeche Mode – Never Let Me Down Again
    42. Toto – Africa
    43. Toto – 99
    44. Robyn Hitchcock ‘n’ the Egyptians — Madonna of the Wasps
    45. The The – Uncertain Smile
    46. Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill
    47. Dukes of Stratosphere – Vanishing Girl
    48. Commodores – Easy
    49. Olivia Newton John – Magic
    50. Olivia Newton John – A Little More Love
    51. Climax Blues Band – I Love You
    52. Steely Dan – Hey Nineteen

I also badly need some sequencing; much of this list is arranged purely alphabetically. Still, with another Pina Colada on the way, here it is.

    Fleetwood Mac – Tusk

…but no fine colombian I hope Ed?

Been mostly using my ipod shuffle for a few weeks now (warmer weather = less pocket space available) and these are the tracks accumulating in an ongoing ‘winner stays on’ competition…

    eMu:
End Of The World - Nancy Sinatra (been used on BBC TV a lot in a trailer for Heroes)
We Winter Wrens, Beachcomber Blues, What One Bottle Can Do - Dolorean (easily 3 of my favourite tracks of the year)
Julia, Sunshine Lady, Lost & Found, Hours Pass Like Centuries, Too Young - Taken By Trees (rest of the album’s good too, but these were the standouts for me)
Tonight I Have To Leave It - Shout Out Louds (another of my fave tracks of the year)
Going To Switch The lights On - Grand National
You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb - Spoon
Another Day To Waste - The Concretes (from the Kid single)
Melody Day & the Four Tet remix - Caribou (excellent, can’t wait for the album)
My Darling - Ralph Myerz (summery!)
Rej - Ame (an oldie, but still really good)
    Summer Song - Karminsky Experience
Just You - Sylvie Lewis (a freebie - thanks!)
Deserter (four tet remix) - Matthew Dear
Country Gang - Dutch Dub (another freebie!)

    Non-eMu
Alas My Love - The Bony King Of Nowhere (from a Wired magazine cover disc, haven’t found anything else available yet)
How’s The World Treating You? - Alison Krauss & James Taylor
Until You Said I’m Gone - Patrick Cleandenim
    Atlas - Battles
    Starry Eyes - The Records
Seven Day Weekend (with Jimmy Cliff) - Elvis Costello
Tears Dry On Their Own - Amy Winehouse
Spider Pig - Homer Simpson (acquired via a good quality clip on youtube and the excellent Audio Hijack Pro software)

…the rest of the limited space taken up with rolling selections from my latest eMu downloads and tracks from assorted others - particularly Interpol, The Editors, The Go Find, Broken Family Band, Thomas Fehlmann, Bees.

Right, had enough of summer now, let’s have some proper weather again :-)

“Knocked Up” is the only track I play off that new Kings of Leon. It’s a “Papa Don’t Preach” for gloomy guys. My response to it is admittedly maudlin. I think it’s because all my siblings are having babies this year.

Am a little nervous today, as I’m supposed to be interviewing Mark Ronson by phone for the station where I DJ. I’ve done, like, one broadcast interview before, and what can you ask Ronson that he hasn’t already been asked over and over again? Wish me luck.

For anyone’s who’s interested: the Bony King of Nowhere (mentioned higher on this site) has just issued a CDR demo with 5 songs on it (Maria - My Favourite - Losing Gravity - Alas My Love - Jack Tar). I guess you can order it through Bram (aka Bony King) himself) through bramvanparys@hotmail.com. Enjoy
