it was a bumpy start for a Neko-less New Pornographers; the low end was too loud and it was bludgeoning everything in sight. “use it” was splotchy and blunt, more about percussion than melody. It’s evening out a little now. “the laws have changed” is just starting to get airborne, and Kath is doing a fine job taking over the Neko parts. The mix could still be cleaner; its hard to hear these songs sound so brutish. It feels like theyre starting to steady themselves, and with the sun going down and “all the old showstoppers”
opening up, the best-planned, best-executed, best-realized festival I’ve ever attended is tumbling toward its conclusion.
