the lead vocalist for Deerhunter is wearing a gold dress. He looks positively creepy, skeletal arms and legs shooting out from a sparkling center – like a scarecrow on its way to a fancy ball. In a way, that’s also how Deerhonter sounds right now: tight, terse, motorik rhythms draped in dazzling, dramatic vocals. It’s a tricky combination — the rhythms stay stern and chugging while the vocals peal out, formless and shapeless, over top. Its like cotton candy being stretched across a steel turbine. There’s not a lot to grab on to – its more suggestion than song – but its a great way to ease into day 2. As I write this, The Ponys have just thrown themselves into their set with a crash and a holler. Things can’t stay tranquil for long, I suppose.
