A trio of strong releases today, including an excellent new Hot Chip single, a name-heavy remix compilation from Get Physical and yet another Arctic Monkeys clone.

Hot Chip, My Piano: Never have I cared a lick for Hot Chip — not even “Over and Over,” which was interminable to me — but “My Piano,” a new Hot Chip song that appears on the group’s new DJ Kicks mix, has changed that, if just for the song’s five minutes and 14 seconds. I like the song’s staccato swing, the little hitched hooks and loops that make up the melody, the effeminate goofiness of the vocals.

Various Artists, 5 Years Get Physical: Get Physical is most notably home to Booka Shade and M.A.N.D.Y., and the second disc of this compilation hosts the best of the German label’s first five years. It’s the first disc, however, that has the real notable stuff: remixes by Hot Chip, the Rapture, Fujiya & Miyagi, Henrik Schwarz, etc. Solid.

The Dogs, Tall Stories from Under the Table: At times sounds like the Smiths, at others the Arctic Monkeys. Bottom-lined? BRITISH.

You’re dead on about “My Piano.” I’ve never understood the appeal either but this song distills everything they do right.

Also, the second half of the Get Physical comp isn’t a best-of, but new tracks from the label’s roster. I’m assuming at least a couple of these are outtakes from earlier work, but there’s lots of good stuff there regardless.

I just reviewed the new list and noted a new album from Glenn Mercer called “Wheels in Motion”. The artist name sounded very familiar so I did a Google search and discovered this is Glenn Mercer who was a member of the legendary Hoboken band the Feelies. From his MySpace page I found this:

Glenn’s forthcoming CD will be available soon. Performers on the record include ex-Feelies: Stan Demeski, Vinny DeNunzio, Dave Weckerman, Anton Fier (all played drums on various tracks), and Brenda Sauter (bass on five songs).

I also noted many older Alias Records titles now available. Looks like some treasure to be found!

Do you know why !K7 won’t put any of the actual DJ-Kicks albums on emusic? The Erlend Oye one is primo and I’d love to hear some of the others…

the only way dj mixes get licensed for digital is if they are album-only downloads. you see itunes do it on some titles. we don’t offer that form of transaction.
