Music Poster Design
Great things are happening in poster design these days. In the growing digital music universe, precious tangible album covers are bordering on extinction. A handful of talented designers have stepped up to the plate to replenish our starved palettes. Kudos to these 7 studios who are screenprinting limited edition prints.

Michael Carpenter runs Nokturnal Studio based in Memphis. We even have a few of his fabulous posters in our design room for inspiration. Textured layered goodness.

Aesthetic Apparatus consists of two Minnesota fellas doing some great screenprinted posters. Thanks to a legal screw-up, looks like you can get this Yo La Tengo poster for free if you buy something else for $30.

Tara McPherson is a supremely talented young illustrator doing dark sultry paintings. Think illustrated children’s books gone horribly wrong. Her music posters are all screenprinted limited editions.

Insound is making really great limited edition indie concert posters by Frencesca Montanari, Scott McPherson, Cole Gerst, and others. Only bummer is they aren’t screenprinted.

Patent Pending Industries’ founding designers come from Sub Pop Records. Killer posters are coming out of this Seattle based company. Get ready for over 100 posters to sift through. They’re going fast though—each poster is printed in wee sets of 100.

Heads of state have a knack for perfect composition. Color, type, everything is meticulously designed yet it looks effortless. I’m in awe. Their posters are screenprinted and only $20. Also, this Jeff Tweedy poster bears a striking resemblance to designer Saul Bass’ film poster Man With the Golden Arm, no?

The Decoder Ring (maybe named after the 1950’s TV show Captain Midnight?) has a small but nice limited-edition collection of posters.

The Bird Machine (http://www.thebirdmachine.com/) out of Chicago does fabulous silk screened work as well. Love the concert posters – definately check out their work as well.
also check out:
- largemammal print! kevin mercer is the guy who makes the heads of state look so good. a screenprinting genius, i tell you. btw, half of heads of state works for sub pop as well.
- matt daly at the bird machine — you don’t see much of his watercolor-esque methods anywhere else in the realm of indierockposterland.
I’d like to add my good friend ISO50 (Scott Hansen) to this as well. A real champ design wise and as a recording artist. You can find him on eMusic under his Tycho moniker. He’s currently signed with Merck, Cyclops Media and Ghostly.
Right on! Thanks for the links – good to learn about largemammal and bird machine. And I can’t believe I forgot to include Scott’s ISO50 work – I’m a big fan… and I didn’t even know he was on eMusic!
People this is great! Please forward more friends of friends who have poster experience – I would like to promote more of this medium on the eMusic site.
